Assistant Practitioners work as part of the range of healthcare and social care teams and have direct contact with patients, service users or clients providing high quality and compassionate care. The role requires workers to have a more in-depth understanding about factors that influence health and ill-health (e.g., anatomy and physiology). The assistant practitioner may also have responsibility for the supervision of other workers or activities delegated by registered healthcare practitioners.

This course is aimed at all assistant practitioners or those individuals that wish to become assistant practitioners. Students may also be in other roles and recruited as apprentices on to this programme. The course focuses on consolidation of learning and on embedding consistently good practice in core areas, as well as the development of additional knowledge and skills.

You will learn about a variety of areas directly relevant to the role, including assessing patients, understanding health principles and effective team working. You will generally learn within your work setting. You will be assessed through written assignments, and your competency in your work practice.

Having completed this course, workers may then progress into undergraduate healthcare profession programmes such as nurse training.

  What You Will Learn

The programme duration is 24months to complete all elements including the external end point assessment requirement for the qualification.

The structure to achieve the Level 5 Diploma for Assistant Practitioners in Healthcare, learners must achieve 120 credits from a combination of mandatory units and optional units. The units covered are:

Understand safeguarding of children and young people
Promote professional development
Work in partnership in health and social care
The structure, organisation and function of the human body
Use and develop systems that promote communication
Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
Lead and manage infection prevention and control within the setting
Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices in health and social care
Manage quality in health and social care
Undertake a research project within services for health and social care
Conduct and support others in the assessment of individual’s health and well being
Promote effective nutrition and fluid balance
The principles and philosophy of healthcare
Lifespan developments and healthcare needs
Understand the principles and application of Physiological measurements
Safeguarding and protection of vulnerable adults
Understand the principles, theories and concepts reacted to leading and developing a work team in a healthcare environment

  Entry Requirements

GCSE in English and Maths or equivalent, a Level 3 Diploma in health and social care or equivalent. A care certificate is desirable but not essential.


One internal exam and completion of End point assessment


Level 4 HE module for Nutrition and Health.

This programme is designed for individuals wishing to study health and social care in the community. It is for two years at Level 4 and is the first year of a foundation or honours degree. The modules studied include Sociological Perspectives, Professional Practice, Developmental Psychological, Safeguarding & Promotion of Welfare, Equality, Diversity & Rights, Health, Welfare & Social Policy. You will be given the opportunity to enhance your knowledge base as the emphasis is on supporting future careers in the health and social care field and for further study. The programme provides a wide range of teaching styles, assessment and work-related learning. As part of your study you will be expected to undertake a minimum of 60 hours work related learning in a voluntary or paid capacity. This should be in a health and social care environment. You will need to have a current Disclosure and Barring Service check in order to undertake this work. The programme is over one day a week for two academic years. Students will benefit from the Health and Social Care department’s excellent links with agencies and organisations that specialise in health and community services and projects.
