This training course is intended for those involved in tree climbing operations and leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial rescue. It does not involve use of a chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirement for a ground person working with a climber in arboriculture.

As aerial rescue is obligatory, those attending should have a ‘head for heights’.

Training takes place over the first 5 days with assessment on Day 6.

On this course you will identify functions and fitting of specialist equipment, use and tying of specialist knots, pre-climbing equipment checks; identification of hazards such as overhead cables, role of the climber and of the ground person, secure working position, climbing techniques, branch walking, use of supplementary anchor points, storage of equipment and regulations (LOLER, PUWER).

This 20 week course, running 1 day a week, is a great introduction to organic horticulture, with a focus on food growing. Following the main growing season students will look at soils, seeds, compost, and plant care, as well as creating plans and exploring different approaches to food growing including permaculture, forest gardening, no-dig gardening and working with wildlife. This programme is based at the world renowned Eden Project in Cornwall and has been designed specifically to allow you to explore many aspects of horticulture including applied science, crop production and sustainability. The programme will provide you with the skills and experience to prepare for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career which embraces tradition, technology and innovation. Both the programme of study and the student experience are greatly enhanced through the collaboration between Cornwall College and the Eden Project. The range of resources including Eden's own plant collections, growing environments, nursery and dedicated teaching facilities, coupled with the nationally renowned micro-propagation research facility, provide a world-class platform from which this exciting and stimulating programme will be delivered. You will quickly become integrated within the Eden Project and, in addition to attending the carefully designed taught modules, will have the opportunity to apply, develop and reflect upon a wide range of practical skills by participating in activities in the tropical and Mediterranean biomes, the outdoor garden and nursery crop production facility. As well as benefiting from working alongside Eden's skilled and specialist horticulturalists, you will also undertake a work placement within another commercial enterprise. In the final year of your study you will undertake a piece of novel research, for which it is encouraged to make full use of the available facilities to explore industry-related issues, that will enhance your CV on successful completion of the course.
