This course is the introduction to the suite of NPTC Certificate of Competence chainsaw qualifications.

The course runs every month for a duration of 3 days. Please contact us for information on dates and times.

You will cover the following:

Basic use and maintenance of the chainsaw
Current health and safety legislation and safety clothing (PPE) guidance
Fuel mixtures and lubricants
Power unit, safety features, recoil starter
Chain identification, bar maintenance, sharpening
Hot and cold start
Chainsaw handling and cutting techniques

Safe Use Of Pesticides PA1 & PA6

This course will enhance understanding, and enable successful students to legally spray their own land, or that of their employer, using Pedestrian Handheld Applicator Equipment (knapsack). The first day will consist of the PA1 theory training, with an online test in the afternoon. This covers the storage, handling, and application of pesticides. The second day is the PA6 Handheld Applicator training; there is then an allocated timeslot on the third day to take the PA6 assessment. The qualification to be gained is a Level 2 City & Guilds lifetime-qualification. The following PPE will be needed for the training: Clean wellington boots (for the PA6) Clean coverall spray suit (for the PA6) Nitrile gloves (for the PA6) Face shield (for the PA6)

This course is suitable for Farmers and Growers, or anyone that uses a Boom Sprayer as part of their work or employment. The course will enhance your understanding of the subject, and enable you to legally spray your own land or that of your employer. This course consists of one day of training, mainly classroom based and takes the form of a powerpoint presentation which covers PA1. There will also be a practical demonstration of PA2. You will then have an on farm assessment to enable you to gain the required City and Guilds/NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides.

How To Use A Chainsaw

No Qualification • Part-time • Duchy College Stoke Climsland


This course is an introduction to using a chainsaw and health and safety requirements. This course is aimed at domestic users who will be trained in health and safety, PPE requirements, chainsaw safety checks and basic cross cutting at ground level. You will be taught by our trainer who delivers our NPTC CS30 courses. The course isn’t accredited so cannot be used for paid or voluntary work.
