This programme prepares you for a career in a variety of engineering disciplines and develops the concepts, knowledge, skills and techniques required for today’s competitive and dynamic engineering industry.

The programme consists of core modules and a series of optional modules, allowing you to focus your learning in areas of interest. Modules of study in the fields of mechanical, electrical, design, production, marine and control engineering, are included to allow for a wide range of possible career goals. The modules have been written with the aid of industry to ensure that the content meets industry needs; they include current best practice and insight into the changing face of engineering technology.

You will have a series of structured lectures, project-based practical activities and industrial visits to help inform and develop your learning. These activities will increase your ability to solve engineering problems, develop your project management skills and help you gain an understanding of the role of engineering in the modern technological world.

All modules will consider the modern world of engineering and will contextualise material to reflect on engineering practice. It is suggested that you undertake around 150 hours of work experience in an engineering field to support your learning. We will help you to find an appropriate placement if you are unable to find your own.

  Entry Requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required (specific unit grades may be requested). Access to HE Diplomas in a relevant subject - 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested). Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language, Science and Mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

  Assessment

Assessment is a combination of coursework and formal examinations. Coursework can consist of analytical problems, formal reports, written reflections on industry practice or write-ups of practical activity.

In order to take this qualification you must have one of the following: Appropriate NVQ Level 3/BTEC or equivalent Appropriate industry registration scheme e.g. Gas Safe Register or OFTEC-105E or equivalent At least two years industry experience of installation of domestic heating and hot water systems currently un-certificated skills equivalent NVQ Level 3 At least two years industry experience of design and advice services of domestic heating and hot water systems at NVQ Level 3 or equivalent This is a one day course and the content includes topics such as: Benefits of efficient heating and hot water Energy efficiency and the building regulations The importance of boiler efficiency The importance of an efficient hot water cylinder Domestic heating and hot water controls and Commissioning The training is designed to suit both experienced and new installers, and consists of a daylong workshop covering a range of topics, including new building regulations, climate change and high efficiency condensing boilers. This is followed by a 90-minute multiple-choice test, which if you pass, gives you the new certificate. We will also ensure you receive training material three weeks before the training for self study to be prepared for the training day. This course is ideal for registered engineers who intend to provide energy advice in the home, develop additional energy advice-giving skills, understand fuel poverty, understand the importance of energy efficiency and how to refer householders for additional assistance. After the course you will be able to certify your own work under the Gas Safe Register.
