Hairdressing Diploma

Hair and Barbering Student If you are interested in a career in hairdressing, then this course will equip you with the latest skills and know how. This qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills. Therefore, all aspects of hairdressing including cutting, colouring and dressing hair will be studied.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own hairdressing services. This course that will include both theory and practical work.

What you will learn

You will be hands-on from the first week. Learning in purpose-built salons, you will be training in a dynamic and professional commercial environment. From cutting and styling, setting and dressing, colouring and lightening, advising clients and creating styles, you will be trained to industry standard.

As well as the practical knowledge that you will gain from working on the job, our team of industry trained professionals will guide you through the theory offering their advice and demonstrating techniques.

Students on this course will also have the opportunity to work on reception, enhancing their work-based skills in customer service, product promotion and retail sales.

Students will be expected to wear uniform and present themselves in a professional manner as practical work will be assessed in the commercial salon.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum GCSEs at grade 3 or working towards grade 4 in English and maths.

At Cornwall College, we recognise that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and we will therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications.

If you are unsure as to whether or not you meet the requirements, please call the department and ask to speak to the study programme manager who will be happy to discuss it with you.

Work experience

You are expected to find an external work placement while on the course. This will help you gain valuable work experience to help you develop a career in this exciting industry. However, we have work place coordinators that can help you or you may be able to gain work experience in our own commercial Salons open to the public.

Assessment

You will be assessed through either written assignments or online multiple choice questions, as well as practical assessment on customers in our commercial salons that are open to the public.

Progression

Once you have completed the Hairdressing Level 2 course, you will have a basic understanding of the hairdressing industry and be ready to move on to the more advanced Level 2 and 3 courses. Cornwall college offers the complete pathway in Hairdressing and you could take your qualifications further by progressing on to the hairdressing or barbering diploma Level 3.

Past students have gone on go on to managing their own business, travel on cruise liners or teach.

We also offer apprenticeships across the hair & beauty industry, so if you want to earn while you learn, then you can consider that option.
