Advanced Counselling Studies*

This programme is intended for people who have completed an introductory counselling course, typically at a Level 2 who wish to develop their counselling skills further or gain a qualification in Higher Education which qualifies them to apply for the Level 5 Diploma in Person Centred Counselling (a professional qualification in Counselling) The Certificate of Advanced Counselling, enables you develop your counselling skills within a person-centred framework. You are not required to work with clients, nor work within a placement, as this is an academic course which does not in itself provide a profession qualification, but can create a pathway towards achieving this. Please note, that there is no automatic progression route between our courses. Each qualification requires a rigorous assessment process including an interview, and due to limited places, you may be placed on a waiting list or may not be successful on your first application.

Dental Nursing Diploma

Level 3 • Part-time • Cornwall College St Austell

From a general check-up to root canal work, as a dental nurse you will be required to have a reassuring and caring nature as it will be your job to look after the patients. You will also need great communication and organisational skills as you will be responsible for looking after the equipment and maintaining high levels of cleanliness. Successful completion of the course will enable you to become a qualified dental nurse and register with the General Dental Council. New apprenticeship standards are being introduced to focus skills training more on specific career roles within industry. These government changes mean the apprenticeship skills development programme is written with employers ensuring you are much more work ready for a specific role by the time you complete your training. As part of your course you will be required to be employed in a trainee dental nurse position.Your employer will give you all the hands-on practical experience you need to become a fully qualified dental nurse. You will need great communication and organisational skills, plus a caring manner to succeed in this industry. Completion of this course will allow you to progress on to further studies at other universities such as: BSc Dental Therapy & Hygiene or BSc (Hons) Dental Therapy.

This degree offers an excellent opportunity to increase both your academic skills and your employability. Your second and third years allow you to select optional modules which suit your career aspirations. For example, if you are interested in a career in mental health support you could choose the modules on Psychological Processes and Psychology in Practice. An interest in health promotion could lead you to choose the module in Health Promotion, whereas an interest in developing as a leader could see you choosing the Leadership and Management module. For applicants interested in issues around equality and diversity, there are module choices in Inclusive Practice and Aspects of Rural Life This programme is studied as a part time top-up where you will complete Year 3 only. It also develops critical analysis, understanding research methods, problem solving, ITC, professional development, developing your CV and interview techniques and gaining workplace experience. Developing your communication skills, work-related experience and the opportunity to recognise and consider the relationship between the subjects you study in college and your actual working environment is encouraged. Assessment is via essays, reports, presentations, seminars and debates. Support, guidance and preparation for all assessments are embedded in study skills sessions and individual modules. The Professional Practice and the Development Through Work modules require you to undertake 120 hours of placement within the health and care field. The modules are designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop your personal and employability skills.
